Short-selling to begin from April 21

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) on Wednesday said short-selling and securities lending and borrowing will be operationalised from April 21.

The circular asked stock exchanges and depositories to make necessary amendments to the relevant bye-laws, rules and regulations for the implementation of the decision, bring the provisions of the circular to the notice of the member brokers/clearing members, depository participants and communicate to the Sebi the status of the implementation of the provisions of the circular in the monthly development report submitted to the market regulator.

Sebi had come out with a circular on December 20, 2007, specifying the broad framework....................

The long wait is over for stock market participants. Regulator Sebi has finally announced that short-selling and stock lending and borrowing will be operational from April 21.

Short-selling will only be allowed in futures and option stocks, for a period of 7 days, after which its positions will have to be squared off.

Sectoral FDI caps will be available for short-selling. Many of the sectors, which have a low FDI cap and where FII limits have been crossed, will not be eligible despite being in the F&O segment.

Institutions and investors borrowing stocks will have to pay a margin fee to the lender.

JAPAN`S NEXT PROBLEM

As we know that's yen has rallied from 125 to sub 100 levels in matter of 4 months .And we also know that Japan have 1.5 trillion dollar worth of US treasuries.So if yen appreciates by 20% than US will make 20 % on 1.5 trillion dollar or 300 billion of notional profits ( which is almost the amount of US subprime losses) because Japan has invested into a depreciating asset (which get depreciated by 20%)..Secondly Japan's economy is 4 trillion USD and major portion is export. Again USA and china are the major partners . So if its currency appreciates by 20 % than one can imagine what will happen to exporters . ( just imagine what will happen to Infosys if rupee appreciates from 40 to 32 level

RCOM will give Esops to 20,000

Mumbai: Just when you though employee stock options (Esops) had been given a quiet burial, it seems to be finding its way back. On Sunday, Reliance Communications (RComm), the telecom arm of the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani group (ADAG), said it will offer up to 1.75 crore shares of the company to about 20,000 employees. At current market prices of a little over Rs 545 for each RComm share on BSE, the plan is worth about Rs 950 crore.
It was put in place to share the growth in value and reward its employees for having participated in the unprecedented success of the company, a press note issued by the group said. When looked at from a macro perspective though, the announcement is a significant one.

How the mighty have fallen...

Global concerns over a US economic recession, and spiraling commodity prices led to a meltdown on the Indian bourses during the week, with the Sensex ending in the red on 3 out of the 4 sessions. For the week ended March 7, 2008, the Sensex lost 9.1%, while the Nifty shed 8.7%.

The week began on a dismal note, as the broader markets could not recover from the opening blues triggered by the fall in US markets the previous week. Banking stocks ended up among the key losers as the BSE Sensex recorded its second highest absolute fall of 901 points. The NSE Nifty shed 271 points. The negative sentiments did not subside on Tuesday even though there was buying interest in heavyweights from the auto, power and cement space. The Sensex lost 319 points, while the Nifty ended lower by 82 points.

However, Wednesday witnessed a change from the downward spiral as IT and FMCG stocks came to the rescue of the indices. The Sensex gained 204 points, while the Nifty added 70 points. After the holiday on Thursday, the markets had yet another dismal day with the Sensex closing below 16,000 for the first time since it began its surge in September 2007. Thus, the BSE Sensex closed at 15,976 (down 567 points) while the NSE Nifty closed at 4,772 (down 150 points) during the last trading day of the week.

On the institutional activity front, between 29th February and 6th March, FIIs emerged as net sellers of equities to the tune of Rs 15 bn (according to figures available), while mutual funds sold equities to the tune of Rs 4 bn (according to figures available).

Sun Outage

A sun outage is an interruption in or distortion of geostationary satellite signals caused by interference from solar radiation. The effect is due to the sun's radiation overwhelming the satellite signal. Generally, sun outages occur in February, March, September and October, that is, around the time of the equinoxes. At these times, the apparent path of the sun across the sky takes it directly behind the line of sight between an earth station and a satellite. As the sun radiates strongly at the microwave frequencies used to communicate with satellites (C-band and Ku-band) the sun swamps the signal from the satellite. The effects of a sun outage can include partial degradation, that is, an increase in the error rate, or total destruction of the signal.

Effect on Indian Stock Exchanges

In India, the BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange) and NSE (National Stock Exchange) use VSATs (Very Small Aperture Terminal) for members to connect to their trading systems. VSATs depend upon satellites for connectivity between the terminals/systems. Hence these exchanges are affected due to the sun outage. These exchanges normally remain closed from 11:45 to 12:30 during 'sun outages', but times vary depending on the scientific factors. The interference in satellite signals disturbs smooth transmission of data of online transactions, hence these share markets remain closed for the duration of sun outages. Due to these outages, the trading sessions are normally extended in the same day to compensate for the lost time. In September 2006, however, only the NSE intended to shut down during the sun outage; the BSE did not. The reason for which is unknown.


NSE shall remain closed between 11:25 to 12:05 Hours as per Circular No.: NSE/CMO/044/2007
